that polka dot trend and how to wear it without looking retro

Polka dots can look quite retro and while I like that look on other people it’s really not something that suits my style. However this season has seen some great pieces being launched into the highstreet and I’m very tempted to be brave and give polka dots a go, with the aim to avoid retro vibes if I can. Some of these pieces could be worn in a way that looks styled in the 60s but I think that they are also perfectly suited for a formal workwear ensemble or fun night out outfit and this is exactly how I’d choose to wear them. There are also a number of types of dotty accessories that could add a statement to an otherwise plain or ordinary outfit which could be a simple way to ease into polka dot trend

Starting with what I think is the most gorgeous item on the board; that polka dot grey wool coat. It’s simply beautiful and I don't have much more to say about it than how easy it'd be to throw over a basic outfit for almost any occasion.

Tie front tops and wrap tops are littering the stores, most of them with flared sleeves, a peplum or with ruffles, three-quarter or long sleeved and pretty low cut. Those that are lightly decorated with dots catch my eye more than the many other patterned blouses as I think they’re perfect for me to ease my way into the world of dots.

Dungarees are something I want to be brave enough to wear and rock so why not embrace polka dots at the same time. I feel like these can be worn casually by wearing a crop top or tee underneath. Dungarees could be worn into the office if done right, I’m not convinced washed denim would suit an office environment but this black and white polka dot piece with wide legs and a light ruffle blouse (like this simple one by Pimkie) underneath could look professional enough.

Another easy way to wear polka dots to work would be a blazer and while it’d look good over a pair of black wide leg trousers or chinos I love the idea of co-ords. A dotty blazer worn with matching dotty shorts is the dream.

The pointed shoes are probably the most retro looking piece on here what with the large navy dots but worn with a simple jean (these are my favourite) or black leather trouser brings these shoes into this century and the perfect way to integrate dots into your work wardrobe.
